Homes that rise with the water

Back to expertise

BACA designed the UK's first amphibious house on the banks of the River Thames — a home that sits on dry land but floats when floodwaters rise. Today we design amphibious, floating and flood-resilient homes for riversides, coasts and lakes.

Rather than building walls against water, we design homes that work with it: gardens that store floodwater, buoyant foundations and living spaces raised to safety without losing their connection to the landscape.

02Methodology

Designed to live with water, not against it

01  Assess

We map flood risk, water levels and ground conditions to understand how the site behaves.

02  Adapt

Buoyant foundations, raised living and water-storing gardens let the home respond to rising water.

03  Live

The result is a home that stays safe, dry and connected to its setting.
