Background

Situated on the Red Sea coast of Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, the Yanbu Dive Centre is envisioned as a new landmark for marine discovery, education, and coastal tourism. The centre captures the spirit of exploration that has defined Yanbu for centuries, transforming its maritime heritage into an experience rooted in sustainable waterfront development. Inspired by the sculptural forms of the desert and sea, the Dive Centre rises from the landscape like a natural formation shaped by wind and water. Arches, pinnacles, and carved surfaces echo the surrounding geology, while soft light and tactile materials create a sense of warmth and calm. The architecture celebrates the meeting of land and sea, guiding visitors through a sequence of spaces that deepen their connection to the Red Sea and its fragile ecosystem.

Beyond a destination for divers, the centre is a place for learning and renewal. It fosters awareness of marine conservation and sustainable tourism, offering visitors a contemporary space to reconnect with nature. By merging water architecture and flood-resilient design, the project stands as a symbol of how culture, climate, and creativity can come together on the waterfront.

Process

The design process emphasised fluid movement andintuitive spatial flow. Educational areas, leisure zones, and exhibition spacesare interwoven through clear sightlines and natural light. The faceted façadedefines key thresholds, while sculpted interiors offer softness and calm.Visitors move easily from the map room to the café, shop, and gallery, supported by logical zoning that enhances the visitor experience andoperational efficiency. The main building’s faceted façade sweeps forward andextends to demark different thresholds. The sumptuous, soft, sweeps of theinterior contrast the rugged and protective exterior. From the map room, visitors can choose to go directly to the café, gift shop and/ or visit thetemporary / permanent exhibition.

Architecture

At its core, the Dive Centre houses a state-of-the-art PADI training academy for divers of all levels. The triple-height pool hall includes tiered depths for varied skill development and a panoramic glass wall framing the Red Sea beyond. Flood-resilient materials, elevated foundations, and naturally ventilated volumes protect the structure from coastal surges while remaining in harmony with the landscape. Direct access to the promenade, outdoor shower areas, and dive boats creates a seamless transition between land and sea.

The Yanbu Dive Centre is an architectural expression of movement, resilience, and respect for the water — a testament to our vision for sustainable architecture on the coast.
