Amphibious House

Location: Buckinghamshire, UK   Status: Completed   Scale: 3-bedroom house, 225sqm

Constraints: Flood Zone 3, Conservation Area

The UK’s first Amphibious House.

This three bedroom family home is located on an island in the picturesque stretch of the Thames that passes through Marlow, Buckinghamshire. The site is designated Flood Zone 3b and within a Conservation Area. The can-float basement provides utility room, study, dining room and cinema room with the entertaining spaces and bedrooms arranged over a further two upper floors creating a luxury dwelling on a modest site.

This project has led to much excitement in the industry as it is the first of it’s kind in the UK and has set a precedent for alternative approaches to building in a future of increased rainfall and flood. Baca’s research through practice has led to Richard Coutts appointment on HM Government’s Flood Advisory Group. Building safe, dry communities that benefit from the beauty of environments surrounded by water is now possible.

The Amphibious House has won multiple awards for innovation.
