Making Space for Water
As first the motorcar transformed 20th century town planning, so it will be water that shapes our communities in the 21st century. Baca is internationally recognised for innovation in flood-resilient and adaptable architecture and spatial-planning. Their work demonstrates the leading role that architecture can play in addressing these crucial issues.
A sustainable future lies beyond the waterfront!
Research and Development is embedded within the DNA of the practice. Baca believes that cities which embrace and take advantage of water will be best placed to meet the social, economic and environmental challenges of the next 20 – 30 years and beyond. ‘Aquatecture’ is a water centric approach in which development goals, flood resilience and adaptation to climate change are reconciled in projects in, on or near water. This approach can unlock strategic urban areas, waterfront sites and dockland areas that could otherwise struggle to be developed.
Our philosophy informs our books, industry guidance and policy development. This serious foundation supports a sense of playfulness and appreciation of both beauty and history to create future-proofed cities full of life, vitality and joy.
