Location: Dover, UK Status: live Scale: 22 flats
This new apartment building in the centre of Dover has been submitted for planning approval.
The overall design concept for the appearance of the proposed flats is of a ‘fortified landscape’, in direct reference to the nearby Drop Redoubt, so that the housing fits comfortably within its setting adjacent to the Western Heights. The site is sloped, and the building rises and tapers to follow the contours of the site.
Brick walls and splayed fortress windows have been developed as key elements driving the design. Additionally, a strategy of greening balconies has evolved in response to the site context, both physical and historic, of the Western Heights that includes: planted parapets to terraces & balconies, protruding deep window boxes and railings which become trellises for climbing plants.
The site is unusual in that it offers opportunity for all facades to have both light at different times of the day and panoramic views.
The proposal provides a healthy mix of 1 bedroom, 2 bedroom and family units in line with the local authority’s core strategy.
