The Royal Marines Association commissioned the memorial in Aroni, Crete to honour the Mobile Navy Defence Organisation who lost their lives in the Battle for Crete 1941. The memorial is to be specifically erected in special memory of Royal Marines who died on land and sea, but have no known grave.
