The LifE Project Process

The LifE project was carried out in a structured but flexible manner to allow innovation and conceptual ideas to be incorporated. This is described below:

  • A set of guiding principles was developed against seven planning requirements (Transport, Construction, Resources, Adaptation, Longevity, Flood risk management, and Land Use).
  • In parallel three study sites were identified
  • A set of tools and technologies that might be used for a development were then identified.
  • These principles and tools were then explored in conjunction with standard development requirements on each of the study sites to develop a holistic LifE solution.
  • An iterative design process, involved developing and eliminating design options through the use of drawings, calculations, analysis and review.
  • The designs for each study site were then assessed against policy and industry guidelines, assessed for general sensibility and revised accordingly (See adjacent table).
  • The most replicable ideas were identified from this work. These are presented in this report and the LifE handbook.
  • A steering group consisting of industry representatives reviewed the LifE project at key stages.
  • Additional reviews of the case studies were provided by the local site representatives.
